Mighty Magnesium

Magnesium is an important mineral that serves innumerable functions in the body. Here are just a handful of its most important tasks:

  • Aids in brain and nervous system function

  • Impacts bone density and strength

  • Increases muscle mass and repairs muscle

  • Transforms food protein into energy

  • Helps the body relax and promotes healthy sleep cycles

  • Helps produce and repair DNA and RNA

  • May help with depression and anxiety symptoms

  • Regulates blood sugar, helping to prevent diabetes

  • Anti-inflammatory and strengthens heart

  • May help prevent migraines or reduce their severity

  • May help with PMS symptoms

It’s estimated that 55 to 70 percent of Americans and Europeans do not get enough magnesium from their diet. The most common signs of magnesium deficiency are a general lack of energy and trouble sleeping - signs of more serious magnesium deficiency are loss of appetite and nausea/vomiting. Foods rich in magnesium include leafy greens, spinach, avocado, salmon, dark chocolate, tofu, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds, almonds, cashews, black beans, edamame, peanut butter, brown rice, halibut, soy milk, whole wheat bread and fortified breakfast cereals.

The standard daily recommendation for magnesium is 400-420mg for men and 310-320mg for women. To ensure your body is getting enough, it’s a good idea to take a supplement in addition to eating healthy, magnesium-rich foods.
