I speak to my patients every day about the issues that drinking pop cause in the body. If you are drinking more then 1 every once in awhile, please read on. It does not matter if it is diet or regular soda, both have negative effects.
Regular sodas have way too much sugar, the average in a can is 10-12 teaspoons.
Every can is a can of chemicals that you are putting into your body, they have NO nutritional value.
1 can/bottle a day dehydrates you for the whole day, no matter how much water you drink.
1 bottle/can binds up to and removes most of your minerals for the day.
Artificial sweeteners used in diet sodas have been shown to cause cancer and do NOT reduce your sugar cravings, in fact may make it worse by making you crave high sugar foods.
A 2012 study shows that drinking diet soda affects the brain and how it processes sweet flavors by affecting dopamine - the neurotransmitter that plays a role in pleasure/motivation/cravings. It actually makes you crave more sweets.
The Harvard School of Public Health says that using diet sodas does not help with reducing weight.
Artificial sweeteners disrupt the gut biome and promote the growth of bad bacteria, altering the way we metabolize glucose.
A 2017 study shows that carbonation and artificial sweeteners increase gas, water retention and bloating. This same study showed that diet soda increases the production of gherlin, the hunger hormone.
A 2013 study showed the regular and diet sodas cause erosive damage to tooth enamel and tooth sensitivity.
So, as you can see, there is not much good that comes out of drinking these sodas. In fact, there is major damage to our bodies when we ingest them. You can actually be addicted to them.
Some ways to work toward reducing and eliminating pop are:
Slowly reduce the number that you drink each day/week
Try flavored seltzers to replace sodas
Health food stores carry fruit juice sweetened soda with no artifical
sweeteners
Work toward eliminating sodas and drink more water and herbal teas, it can only improve your health!!
